London-based label Free-Spirit Records (FSR) are a prolific bunch, releasing any number of compilations, solo artist albums and EPs each year. At the very core of which is their Free-Spirit series it being their first ever foist on a then unsuspecting world. How times have changed though with FSR now on the verge of celebrating its 10th anniversary during which time it has launched many a career, attracted talent from across the planet to its roster and brought into the wider consciousness all number of artists. The latest of the Free-Spirit Records series is Volume 8, Dividualism. Each of its predecessors designated the responsibility of a different individual to compile and over the years featured producers from across the spectrum and across the sphere. This time it is Dillan M playing selector and those aware of him will have an expectation of what he brings to the fore, for those who don’t, expect no-nonsense, new-fashioned psychedelic.
Dividualism containing a varied line-up of contributors including tunes from FSR stalwarts – Journey, and Sonic Wave Control, some co-productions – Twelve Sessions and Woodstech, K.i.M and Manipulation, Hypnoise and Ying Yang Monks plus a few from those appearing in FSR colours for the very first time such as Breathead, Cylon and Space Vision. The common theme; the sensibilities that are constructed into each track. Think focused, with intent, stripped back, unreconstructed, unadulterated energy and you are getting the idea. Working on the primeval surges that happen at the subliminal layer which then get released as a re-interpretation of what is surging from within, often in an atmosphere of communal experience. Yes, this compilation is all about the dance-floor, be it sandy, dusty, leafy or wooden, the sounds are universal, appealing to all comers from all quarters. Have a listen, and get on it too.
