Tropical storms sit on a spectrum that has at one end a tropical disturbance and the other a hurricane/cyclone which is an applicable means of measurement for the latest release on Free-Spirit Records, a three-track EP called Tropical Storm by Brazilian psy-trance DJ/producer Twelve Sessions. This EP also existing as a continuum so that you, as the listener, start in one place and end in a completely different one except that it is back to front, starting as full blown tropical storm before winding its back to a point comparable to a tropical disturbance. Tropical Storm, the opening track, rocks along, listen closely and hear the sirens sound early then brace yourself this is going to be quite an occurrence. Stabs, a rolling beat like thunder across the heavens but just when utter mayhem is about to be unleashed there is a glimpse of sweet sunshine, reach for the sky for we have made it through the night and euphoria abounds. It never reached cyclonic conditions but wow what a storm. Next up is Boundless a step below in intensity capturing the disturbance in the energy fields but more a tropical depression, the storm clouds fading to the horizon. Still intense peaks are reached, the kicks remaining urgent and there is a complexity in componentry with the resultant turbulence causing hearts to flutter and limbs urging to move. Twelve Sessions’ starting point is always a solid grooveline, defining his “sound”, but it is what is added to that layer that provides the intensity. The last tune on the EP is Hallucinations its own beginning consisting of a 4/4 beat with simple sound components that resonate as reminders of what has preceded but a sense of peace now pervades, the wind is still discernable but only slightly; a tropical disturbance. So whilst we may have gone backward we are happy to reach the end, our hair is tussled, pulses raised and the experience, whilst refreshing, will also be long lasting. Tropical Storm, by Twelve Sessions, the forecast is good.
